The M11 was an evolution of the P228, used by US Airborne units, pilots and Army and USMC Criminal Investigators, due to its compact size.  The P228 originally carried 13 rounds, and the current M11 A1 is a 15 round pistol, and now mirrors the P229 9mm, with some military grade enhancements.  the P228 and P229 are the compact versions of the P226 pistol.

The M11-A1 semi-automatic pistol has a short-recoil action, and is DA/SA, so the safety is nested in the decocker mechanism. It measures 7.1 inches in length, and weighs 29.6 oz.  This handgun is lightweight yet sturdy. It features a 3.9-inch barrel and comes standard with three (3) 15-round magazines, firing the 9mm rounds.  The barrel is threaded for optional use with a suppressor, and the tritium Sig Lite night sights offer clear shots in the dark.

This pistol also passes the military's 240-hour salt spray corrosion test.
