MK18 Build Guide — Clone-Correct SOPMOD Mod 1 Specification

The MK18 CQBR is the most-fielded short-barrel upper receiver group in USSOCOM — and the most often built wrong. This page covers exactly what makes a Mod 0, Mod 1, and Mod 3 clone-correct, which parts are non-negotiable, and where to find them at CCC. If you're after the product listing, go straight to our MK18 complete uppers page. If you want to understand the build before you buy, you're in the right place.

What Is the MK18?

The MK18 CQBR (Close Quarters Battle Receiver) was developed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division beginning in the late 1990s in response to NSW's need for a submachine-gun-class package that still fired 5.56mm. The solution: a 10.3-inch cold-hammer-forged barrel on a standard M4A1 lower. The upper receiver group — the URG — became the MK18 Mod 0. Crane went through two further revisions: Mod 1 (Daniel Defense RIS II replaces the older KAC RIS I rail) and Mod 3 (Geissele MK16 M-LOK rail, the current SOPMOD Block II fielded configuration, also called the URGi). All three variants are in active service. Each has a specific parts profile. None are interchangeable if you're building clone-correct.

The Mod 1 → Mod 3 transition is the most common source of error. Builders use a Geissele MK16 rail (Mod 3 spec) on a Colt-lower / Colt-barrel build and call it a Mod 1. It isn't. The rail is the primary distinguishing feature. Get that right first.

Mod 1 — Clone-Correct Parts List

The Mod 1 is the most commonly requested MK18 clone. Here are the non-negotiable components:

  • Lower receiver: Colt M4A1 — the correct lower is a Colt, full stop. A Daniel Defense lower is correct for a URG-I (Mod 3) build, not a Mod 1.
  • Upper receiver: Colt or FN M4A1 flat-top forging.
  • Barrel: FN CHF 10.3" government profile, 1:7 twist, M4 extension. Cold-hammer-forged is the spec — not button-rifled.
  • Rail: Daniel Defense RIS II — the defining feature of the Mod 1. No substitution is clone-correct.
  • Rail covers: KAC tan (coyote) ladder rail panels, not the DD covers.
  • BCG: Colt auto 5.56 BCG (chrome-lined).
  • Charging handle: Mil-spec GI.
  • Suppressor / muzzle: Surefire SOCOM 556 RC (preferred) or KAC NT4.
  • Optic: Aimpoint CompM4 on a Larue or GDI mount.
  • Light: Surefire M600 series on a KAC or Viking Tactics mount.

Mod 3 (URGi) — Clone-Correct Parts List

The URGi is the current-issue SOPMOD Block II upper. It diverges from the Mod 1 in the rail and several ancillary components. The URGI complete uppers at CCC are built to this specification.

  • Lower receiver: Colt M4A1 (same as Mod 1) — or a Daniel Defense lower for URG-I builds where DD was the contract lower.
  • Barrel: FN CHF 10.3" (CQB) or 14.5" (M4A1 URGi). Mid-length gas system on 14.5".
  • Rail: Geissele MK16 M-LOK (13.5" on 10.3" barrel, 15" on 14.5"). No substitution.
  • BCG: Geissele or FN auto BCG.
  • Muzzle: Surefire WarComp 3-prong (unpinned) or Surefire SOCOM RC2 suppressor.
  • Optic: Aimpoint CompM4s, ACOG TA31, or Vortex Razor HD Gen III (later Block II).
