URG-I Build Hub | Clone-Correct Geissele USSOCOM Upper Receiver Group

The URG-I — Upper Receiver Group Improved — is the upper assembly USSOCOM adopted to replace the legacy MK18 and M4A1 upper receiver groups starting in 2019. If you've heard "URGI rifle," "urgi upper," or seen footage of operators running a distinctly thin-rail Geissele upper, this is what they're carrying. This page covers what makes a URG-I clone-correct, which parts are non-negotiable, and where to find them at CCC.

What Is the URG-I?

The URG-I program was awarded to Geissele Automatics under a USSOCOM contract to produce upper receiver groups that improved on the MK18 CQBR and standard M4A1 in three ways: lighter rail profile, improved thermal management under sustained fire, and a thinner, full free-float handguard geometry.

The core changes from MK18 Mod 1 to URG-I:

  • Rail: Daniel Defense RIS II (MK18) → Geissele Super Modular Rail MK16 M-LOK
  • Gas system: Carbine (10.3") and mid-length (14.5") depending on configuration
  • Barrel: Cold-hammer-forged, chrome-lined, correct contour per variant
  • Bolt carrier: Geissele-spec enhanced BCG
  • Upper receiver: Geissele-forged, MIL-SPEC dimensions

The lower receiver and fire control group remain standard M4A1 specification — the URG-I is an upper-only program, meaning it drops onto any mil-spec M4/AR-15 lower.

URG-I 10.3 vs URG-I 14.5 — Which Configuration?

USSOCOM fields both barrel lengths depending on unit role:

URG-I 10.3" (CQB / Suppressed) — The short-barrel configuration used by units operating in confined environments. Paired with a suppressor in most operational contexts. Carbine-length gas system. The correct civilian equivalent is a 10.3" SBR (requires NFA tax stamp) or pistol-configuration build.

URG-I 14.5" (General Purpose Carbine) — The longer variant preferred for general infantry and assault roles where additional velocity matters. Mid-length gas system for improved dwell time and reduced bolt velocity. This is the most common URG-I upper clone build because a 14.5" barrel with a pinned-and-welded muzzle device meets the 16" federal minimum without NFA registration.

CCC carries clone-correct builds in both configurations. See the product pages for full spec breakdowns.

Clone-Correct URG-I Parts List

Upper Receiver Group (the URG-I itself):

  • Geissele Super Modular Rail MK16 M-LOK (correct rail — not MK13, not MK4)
  • Cold-hammer-forged chrome-lined barrel, correct contour (10.3" or 14.5")
  • Geissele-spec BCG (enhanced carrier, matched bolt)
  • Geissele Charging Handle
  • Forward assist and dust cover per M4A1 spec

Lower Receiver Group (add to any M4A1-spec lower):

  • M4A1-spec lower receiver (Colt, Daniel Defense, or equivalent forging)
  • Crane-approved fire control group — standard mil-spec or Geissele SSA-E
  • SOPMOD Block II stock (LWRC SOPMOD or equivalent — not a standard M4 stock)
  • Mil-spec pistol grip

Common add-ons (SOPMOD Block II-compatible):

  • Aimpoint ACRO C-2 or AN/PEQ-15 ATPIAL laser
  • Surefire SOCOM suppressor (300 or 556 series)
  • Geissele Super Dynamic Enhanced (SD-E) trigger

How the URG-I Differs From the MK18

Builders sometimes ask whether the URG-I is just a newer MK18. It is not — and using the terms interchangeably is the most common clone-correctness error in this niche.

The MK18 is defined by its 10.3" barrel and Daniel Defense RIS II rail. The URG-I is defined by its Geissele MK16 rail and is fielded in both 10.3" and 14.5" barrel lengths. A 14.5" MK16-railed build is definitionally a URG-I, not a MK18. A 10.3" RIS II build is a MK18, not a URG-I.

Clone correctness requires knowing which program you're replicating before you select parts. CCC's product pages identify the exact fielded variant each assembly corresponds to.

URG-I at Charlie's Custom Clones

CCC's URG-I upper clone inventory covers both primary fielded configurations. Every build uses the correct Geissele MK16 rail — not a look-alike — and the correct CHF barrel specification. Products are tagged by configuration (10.3 / 14.5) and fielding unit where known.
