The Mean Green Machine

Geissele Green Federal Sorting Carbine 14.5" pinned and welded (to 16")

Some rifles are green because somebody picked a color. The Mean Green Machine is green because Charlie’s had the right parts. Built by Potomac Armory for Charlie’s Custom Clones in a run of fewer than five rifles, it combines a Geissele Super Duty ODG lower, the 10" Mk4 Federal ODG rail and ODG Geissele Government charging handle with a 14.5" Geissele cold-hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel and mid-length gas system.

The black G-marked Geissele upper, barrel and traditional military furniture are intentional. Rather than coating everything to match, the black and green components give this rifle the pieced-together character that made us want to build it in the first place.

Highlights

  • Geissele 10" Mk4 Federal ODG Rail — The actual Federal-pattern handguard, with its distinctive extended lower Picatinny section and FBI contract lineage.
  • 14.5" Geissele CHF Barrel — Chrome-lined with a mid-length gas system for a serious general-purpose 5.56 rifle.
  • ODG Super Duty Lower — The Geissele foundation gives the rifle its unmistakable green center section without turning the whole gun into a color exercise.
  • ODG Government Charging Handle — A hard-to-find companion to the Federal rail and another part Charlie’s has historically associated with FBI contract production.
  • Purposeful Mil-Spec Components — Toolcraft BCG, ALG/Geissele fire-control parts, H2 buffer and P&S M4 stock keep the supporting hardware proven and straightforward.
  • Fewer Than Five Built — This is a small parts-driven project, not the beginning of another production rifle line.

The Federal Rail, Without trying for an FBI Clone

The part that explains this rifle is the handguard.

Geissele states that its 10" Mk4 Federal rail was used to fulfill FBI contracts. It differs visibly from the ordinary Mk4 through the elongated M1913 section at 6 o’clock near the muzzle, while retaining M-LOK around the rail and the rigid Geissele barrel-nut system. Charlie’s has been chasing the green versions for years; we previously packaged the ODG Federal rail and ODG Government charging handle together as part of our limited “Big Green Kit.”

The obvious move would have been another short FBI/HRT-pattern build. We went the other direction.

Potomac Armory built the Mean Green Machine around a 14.5" Geissele CHF, chrome-lined barrel, mid-length gas and low-profile gas block. The short 10" Federal rail leaves plenty of barrel forward of the handguard and gives the rifle proportions closer to an earlier M4 than a modern full-length-rail gun. An extended A2 flash hider is pinned and welded at the muzzle. The result looks unusual because very few current rifles are built this way—and that is exactly the point.

There is also no attempt to make every green surface perfectly match. Geissele itself explains that colored Type III hardcoat anodizing naturally varies from component to component and even changes substantially under different lighting. Their ODG can move through several shades of green; exact color matching is not inherent to the process.

That variation works here. Green Federal rail. Green Super Duty lower. Green charging-handle controls. Black forged upper. Black barrel. Black military furniture.

The supporting components are equally deliberate. A Toolcraft nitride mil-spec BCG, ALG/Geissele mil-spec trigger group, six-position receiver extension, H2 buffer, P&S Products M4 stock and standard pistol grip keep this from becoming an exercise in putting an expensive logo on every part. The special pieces are special where they matter.

We had enough of them to build fewer than five rifles.

When they are gone, this particular Mean Green Machine project is finished.

THIS IS A SERIALIZED FIREARM.  It must ship to a Federal Firearms License holder.  No civilian exceptions.

Buying and shipping through Charlie’s is easy, but there is some information you need to know. Only a federally licensed firearms dealer may receive a firearm or federally regulated serialized item (like a receiver or suppressor). We cannot ship these items directly to you. Please follow these steps to process your transaction:

1)     Check your state laws to make sure the federally regulated item you want to purchase is legal in your state. Your FFL dealer should be able to give you all of the necessary information regarding your state specific laws. But, if we ship to your FFL, and there is a legal issue, we cannot accept a return. So please make sure that you know and follow your local and state laws.

2)     A quick google search will show you what Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealers are in your area. When you are ready to purchase, contact the FFL dealer you would like to use and get their shipping address. During the check-out, put YOUR address in the “billing” section and the FFL DEALER’S address in the “shipping” section. If you don’t know your FFLs address, that’s okay. You can send the information later.

3)     After check out, make sure to contact your FFL dealer to ensure they will receive your shipment for you (most do this for a small fee, but you should always double check).

4)     Have your dealer send us a copy of their FFL to FFL@CharliesCustomClones.com. Charlie’s does not reach to your FFL (MAKE THEM EARN THEIR FEE!!!)

5)     Be patient! In order to ensure we remain compliant with all federal laws, our compliance department is kept separate from our sales and operations team. Please allow a few days for our compliance officer to verify all of your dealer’s documents and ensure all federal laws are being observed. You should hear from our compliance department within 3-4 business days. If not, feel free to reach out for a status update.

That’s it! We try to make this process as simple as possible for our customers, but if you are unfamiliar the process or have any other questions, please visit our How to Buy a Firearm page for more details.

California and New York residents please, click here. The process may be different due to state specific laws.

NOTE: The free shipping option does not apply to full rifles, unless purchased with a riflescope.  If you choose free shipping at check-out, we will bill you for shipping later.
