The long heritage of the Colt 1911

The 1911 pistol has always been more than just a firearm; it's a piece of history. For enthusiasts, the Colt 1911 isn't just another gun—it's a return to the golden age of firearms. Let's dive deeper into the story of this iconic model.

In the early days, Colt's Patent Firearms Mfg. Co. was the undisputed king of 1911-type pistols. Their dedication to the original design, known as the Government Model, was unwavering. For nearly 60 years, from 1911 to 1970, the design remained largely unchanged. But in 1971, the first significant mechanical "improvement" was introduced. The "Accurizor" barrel and bushing aimed to enhance the intrinsic accuracy of the Colt Government Model pistols, leading to the birth of the MK IV/Series 70.

Fast-forward to 1983, and Colt made another significant change. Concerns about product liability led to the introduction of a new firing pin safety system in the 1911 line. This change marked the transition from the Series 70 to the Series 80 models. This improved safety system locked the firing pin until the trigger was pulled, helping to alleviate concerns over unintentional discharges from dropping or rough handling of the weapon.

The turn of the century brought challenges for Colt. By 2001, rival manufacturers dominated the 1911 market. Colt wouldn't be left behind. New enhanced models with currently demanded features were added to the catalog. Over the years, the 1911 continues to stay relevant. Its performance, reliability, and feel resonate with the essence of Colt's legacy. The slide action is smooth, the controls operate seamlessly, and the fit is snug yet not overly tight. These pistols are a testament to Colt's commitment to quality and tradition.

In 1949, Colt introduced the original 9mm Commander model which featured an aluminum frame. This pistol was introduced to compete in a US Army request for a lighter officer's sidearm. Colt would release the Commander model to the general public in 1950 in .45 ACP and remains in the line up to this day.

The Colt Commander is more than just a firearm—it's a journey through time. Personal protection with the technology that protected our nation for over 100 years. It's a bridge between the past and the present, offering gun enthusiasts a chance to own and experience a piece of history. Whether you're a seasoned shooter or a budding enthusiast, a Colt 1911 promises an experience like no other.

What makes the Night Commander different?

The Night Commander is more than just a chopped 1911. The weight reducing aluminum frame is enhanced with an undercut trigger guard and up-swept beaver tail grip safety allow for a higher grip for better recoil control. This grip safety combined with the Commander ring hammer eliminate hammer bite present for some shooters on older models with spur hammers and short tang grip safeties. A target style three hole trigger helps with optimal finger position. The flat mainspring housing is serrated, and the front strap is checkered for sure grip even in wet conditions. The magazine release is checkered, and the thumb safety is extended. A dual spring recoil assembly helps to reduce felt recoil and prolong the service life of the firearm. Genuine Novak 3 dot Tritium night sights ensure the sights are visible in any lighting condition, and are low snag which is perfect for a carry gun.

When you think of a 1911, Colt is the name that echoes through history. This model receives the "Night" part of its name is from its combination of a blued carbon steel slide with a matte black Cerakote frame and black G10 half checkered grips. The controls are silver to give a pop to the design. Beyond aesthetics, it promises performance and reliability. Whether for fighting or fun, this pistol belongs in any holster or collection.

THIS IS A SERIALIZED FIREARM.  It must ship to a Federal Firearms License holder.  No civilian exceptions.

Buying and shipping through Charlie’s is easy, but there is some information you need to know. Only a federally licensed firearms dealer may receive a firearm or federally regulated serialized item (like a receiver or suppressor). We cannot ship these items directly to you. Please follow these steps to process your transaction:

1)     Check your state laws to make sure the federally regulated item you want to purchase is legal in your state. Your FFL dealer should be able to give you all of the necessary information regarding your state specific laws. But, if we ship to your FFL, and there is a legal issue, we cannot accept a return. So please make sure that you know and follow your local and state laws.

2)     A quick google search will show you what Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealers are in your area. When you are ready to purchase, contact the FFL dealer you would like to use and get their shipping address. During the check-out, put YOUR address in the “billing” section and the FFL DEALER’S address in the “shipping” section. If you don’t know your FFLs address, that’s okay. You can send the information later.

3)     After check out, make sure to contact your FFL dealer to ensure they will receive your shipment for you (most do this for a small fee, but you should always double check).

4)     Have your dealer send us a copy of their FFL to FFL@CharliesCustomClones.com. Charlie’s does not reach to your FFL (MAKE THEM EARN THEIR FEE!!!)

5)     Be patient! In order to ensure we remain compliant with all federal laws, our compliance department is kept separate from our sales and operations team. Please allow a few days for our compliance officer to verify all of your dealer’s documents and ensure all federal laws are being observed. You should hear from our compliance department within 3-4 business days. If not, feel free to reach out for a status update.

That’s it! We try to make this process as simple as possible for our customers, but if you are unfamiliar the process or have any other questions, please visit our How to Buy a Firearm page for more details.
