Nickel boron (NiB) bolts in an AR-15 bolt carrier group (BCG) can have several special properties, including:

  • Smoothness
    NiB bolts are smooth and can be easy to clean, even after being shot with hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
  • Self-lubrication
    The boron coating on NiB bolts is slick and self-lubricating, though some recommend adding a little bit of oil.
  • Environmental friendliness
    NiB is non-toxic and more environmentally friendly than hard chrome, which it has similar protective properties to.
  • Hardness
    NiB coatings can be made harder through heat treating.
