The Delta Carbine Story

Before there was an M4A1, Delta Force was already defining what the modern fighting carbine would become.

By the early 1990s, Delta operators were using compact Colt carbines and adapting them around the realities of special operations: shorter barrels, collapsible stocks, optics, weapon lights, and suppressors. Much of what later became standard across the U.S. military was being developed and proven in small numbers by units that needed the capability first.

Then came Mogadishu.

On October 3, 1993, Delta Force operators entered the city alongside Rangers and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment as part of Task Force Ranger. The battle that followed became one of the defining American special-operations engagements of the modern era—and later the story known around the world as Black Hawk Down.

Among the carbines associated with Delta during this period was the Colt 723, a lightweight 14.5" carbine that predates the standardized M4.

And on a very small number of those rifles was one of the rarest pieces of the story: the suppressor now known as the Allen Engineering M4-Delta.

The M4-Delta

The M4-Delta was developed in the early 1990s around the 14.5" Colt 723.

Unlike the later AEM5, the M4-Delta extends rearward over the barrel and indexes against a dedicated collar positioned at the front sight base. That arrangement gives the rifle its distinctive long, tucked-back suppressor profile while keeping much of the suppressor body behind the muzzle.

Allen Engineering identifies Delta as the primary military user of the design during the 1990s.

Production was limited. Photographs were scarce. For years, the system became one of those pieces of special-operations history that clone builders knew existed but had difficulty reproducing correctly.

Today, Allen Engineering once again produces the M4-Delta. That makes it possible to build the rifle around the correct suppressor system rather than simply choosing something that looks close.

Gordon, Mogadishu, and Black Hawk Down

The best-known rifle from this story is associated with Master Sergeant Gary Gordon, who, along with Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart, volunteered to defend the crew of a downed Black Hawk helicopter during the Battle of Mogadishu. Both men were killed and were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Photographs of Gordon and the later depiction of the battle in Black Hawk Down made the suppressed Delta carbine one of the most recognizable rifles of the early special-operations era.

Gordon's documented Colt 723 used the earlier C7/A1-style carry-handle sighting arrangement. Our Delta Carbine uses the A2 configuration that was emerging during the same transitional period and leading directly toward the M4.

We do not present this rifle as Gordon's exact carbine.

We present it as something broader: the Delta Carbine—a rifle built around the architecture, proportions, and suppressor system that helped define an extraordinary period in American special operations.
