The PST Gen 2 line of scopes is right at the tipping point of excellent scopes and okay scopes. Vortex makes a large line-up of scopes that run from something you would run on your kid's BB gun to World class trophy winning scopes. The PST line was good, but the Gen 2 tipped the PST over the line, so to speak, to be an excellent scope. We at Charlie's particularly like the PST Gen 2 in the low power variable LPVO line and the mid-range, like the 3-15X here. I suppose the lightweight nature of the PST Gen 2 and the excellent optics position it well for any shooter: from hunting, to target shooting, to PSR competitive shooting.
We define a mid-range scope as a variable power scope that is somewhere in the 3-18X range. So, perhaps 3-15X, 4-16X, 6-18X, etc. Longer range scopes typically have a high-end magnification of 24X to 27X and extreme long range scopes are typically 35X to 40X and so forth. A mid-range scope is most effective at most "normal" shooting ranges, from 100 to 1,000 yards, give or take. We have found that scopes with mid-range powers need to have enough quality to capture the target image with sharp quality, but may not need the extra weight of more lenses that typically are associated with longer range scopes, which require even higher quality optics to resolve distances in the 1,200 to 1,500-yard range, and even further.
A lesser scope will start to give chromatic distortion around the target and in the edges of a scope. A higher-end optic will come at the price of extra lenses, which means more length, more weight and higher cost. The Vortex PST Gen 2 mid-range scopes have become a de facto standard for where okay ends and where very good and excellent begin. To name names, in the Vortex line-up, the Razor Gen2 HD and Gen3 HD are extremely high quality optics which will hold images in crisp quality out to 2,000 yards. The Strike Eagle, going down the line, does good enough at short distances, but is not up to the job of the PST Gen 2.
The Viper PST Gen II brings you all the features of elite, top-tier tactical optics, with exceptional performance at a fraction of the cost. The 5x optical system delivers bright and crisp images across the zoom range with an impressive field of view for quicker target acquisition. Exposed turrets provide ample range of adjustment for dialing long-range shots, are available in MOA or MRAD and always match the reticle. After a day of dialing at extended ranges, the integrated, mechanical, RZR zero stop will bring you back to your exact zero every time with positive engagement.
