Black Hills Ammunition 5.56x45mm NATO 77 Grain Sierra MatchKing Tipped Ammo (TMK)

Box of 50 cartridges

At Charlie's, we don't sell a large variety of ammo.  We carry mostly Black Hills ammo because we highly recommend using it, no matter what weapon system you are using.  Black Hills makes a lot of the ammo that our military uses.  It is quality ammo.  It does not fail.  These guys are meticulous at what they do.

When it comes to long-range shooting, the Black Hills 77 grain TMK (Tipped MatchKing) ammunition stands as a testament to precision and reliability. Manufactured to meet the stringent requirements of both military and civilian marksmen, this ammo offers an unparalleled shooting experience.

Black Hills Ammunition worked for years, with first the US Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) and later the U.S. Navy, on a long-term project that resulted in MK 262 Mod 1. The project started out to develop ammo for competitors initially and morphed its way into the magazines of operators. Civilian shooters can buy that exact same round—it just comes in a much prettier box—for improved downrange performance, accuracy, and lethality, right here at Charlie's.

Highlights

  • 77 Gr. TMK
  • Velocity: 2750 FPS
  • Energy: 1293 Ft. Lbs.

This cartridge is the new and improved version.  Probably the best ballistics, bar none, for the 5.56mm AR platform.  The tipped version of the military's Mk262.  If you are shooting longer distances, this is the only ammo you should be using.

Ballistic Performance

The TMK projectile features a polymer tip, enhancing its ballistic coefficient to a remarkable 0.420. This translates to superior external and terminal ballistics, making it ideal for mid to large-sized game hunting as well as competitive shooting. With an average muzzle velocity of 2750 feet per second and muzzle energy of 1293 foot-pounds, the ammo delivers consistent performance across various barrel lengths.

Material and Construction

The ammunition is factory new and utilizes high-quality brass cases with Boxer primers, ensuring that it is both non-corrosive and reloadable. The Sierra Tipped MatchKing bullet is the star of the show, offering a level of accuracy that is hard to match.

Versatility and Applications

While originally designed for military applications, the Black Hills 77 grain TMK has found favor among competitive shooters and hunters alike. Its high ballistic coefficient and reliable fragmentation make it a versatile choice for both short and long-range engagements.

Testing and Reliability

Extensive testing has been conducted at ranges of 100, 200, and even 300 yards, with results showcasing impressive accuracy. The ammo has been tested in various rifles, including those with 18" and 20" barrels, and has shown minimal standard deviation in performance metrics like velocity and energy.

Comparison with Other Brands

When compared to other 5.56mm options like the Mk262 military load and 77gr SMK, the TMK offers similar accuracy but with improved terminal ballistics. Its performance metrics make it a viable alternative to heavier .308 caliber bullets for long-range shooting.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're a seasoned marksman or a weekend warrior, the Black Hills 77 grain TMK ammunition offers a blend of precision and reliability that is hard to beat. Its superior ballistic performance and high-quality components make it a top choice for those who refuse to compromise on accuracy and effectiveness.

Charlie’s stocks and sells four different varieties of basically the same 77 grain Mk262 Mod1 ammunition, so if we are out of stock of your favorite selection, take a look at the other separately listed and inventoried items:

For each of these selections, if we are out of stock, you should enter your email addressed to be notified when the ammo is in stock. Black Hills Mk262 77 grain ammo is a normally stocked item at Charlie’s. Some other brands of ammo come and go, but Black Hills arrives every month or so. Maybe just not enough at times.

Also, market forces may cause both the availability and the price of ammo to change with more regularity, up and down, than other catagories of products that we carry and sell.
