KAK XM177 Flash Hider-Moderator with Grenade Ring — Clone Correct, 1/2×28 | Vietnam-Era Authenticity
The sound moderator that defined the XM177E2's silhouette. No component makes a Vietnam-era CAR-15 clone more recognizable than the distinctive two-chamber moderator on the muzzle — and no detail matters more to serious collectors than getting it right. The KAK XM177 Flash Hider-Moderator is a clone-correct reproduction of the original Colt moderator, complete with grenade ring, threaded 1/2×28 for modern host rifles.
The Moderator's Story
The XM177E2 was the compact carbine issued to SOG operators, Special Forces advisors, and aircrews throughout the Vietnam War. Its shortened barrel created a sharp, uncomfortable muzzle blast — the moderator was Colt's solution, using two expansion chambers to reduce noise and flash signature. It wasn't a suppressor in the modern sense; it was a flash and blast moderator that also gave the XM177 its unmistakable profile.
KAK's reproduction captures the correct dimensions and the grenade ring that distinguished the E2 variant from earlier configurations. For a clone-correct XM177E2 build, this is the muzzle device. Charlie's has been sourcing correct clone components since 2017 — we know the difference between "looks close" and "looks right."
What You Should Know Before Buying
Threaded 1/2×28, compatible with standard AR/M16 muzzle threads. Check your local laws regarding overall length — on a short barrel, the moderator adds to OAL and may affect SBR thresholds. Pin-and-weld is an option for making short barrels permanently compliant. The moderator is a muzzle device, not a suppressor — no NFA form required.
