In the late 1970s, the US Marine Corps requested several design changes to the M16A1. Colt went to the drawing board and brought back what would become the M16A2. In 1983 the USMC would adopt this new variant, followed by the US Army in 1986. The changes included new sights, a new barrel contour, a faster twist rate to stabilize heavier bullets, new handguards, and a modified flash hider.
Built for high-precision engagements, the M16A2 rifle outpaces its predecessor with a heavier, stiffer barrel, ensuring better shot accuracy and reducing shot deflection. The redesigned round-contour handguard not only fortifies the rifle's structure but also promotes a firmer grip, essential during rapid-fire situations. To top it off, the improved rear sight is easily adjustable for windage and range, further enhancing the shooter's accuracy and control.
Crafted for uncompromising reliability and longevity, the M16A2 incorporates several design modifications that reinforce its durability. The new buttstock and pistol grip are made of robust, injection-moldable plastic, greatly resistant to breakage. The upper receiver design has been modified to deflect ejected cartridges, ensuring the safety of left-handed firers and preserving the receiver's integrity. The interlocking system between the steel bolt group and the barrel extension allows for a lightweight aluminum receiver without compromising the rifle's robustness.
Engineered with a focus on tactical versatility and ammunition efficiency, the M16A2 is equipped with a burst control device that limits the automatic mode to three rounds per trigger pull. This feature not only conserves ammunition but also significantly enhances shooting accuracy. The inclusion of a muzzle compensator reduces position disclosure while boosting controllability and precision in both burst and rapid semi-automatic fire. Lastly, the M16A2 features a heavier barrel with a 1 in 7 twist to fire NATO standard SS 109 type (M855) ammunition, ensuring effective range and penetration, while maintaining compatibility with older M193 ammunition designed for a 1 in 12 twist.
We have a small number of Colt M16A2 take off uppers available. These meet the Mil-Spec and are an excellent match for your next retro project. With the exception of the handguards, this is new "old stock" upper receiver, meaning it has not been used, but it is also not current production. Some reconstruction of parts has been used to bring the uppers back to new status.
