Leupold Mark 4HD 2.5-10X42 M5C3 Riflescope

First Focal Plane - TMR Reticle

Building on the legacy of the workhorse Mark 4 series and based on the the scopes chosen by SOCOM, the Leupold Mark 4HD provides discerning shooters a lightweight and durable optic for any precision shooting need.

The Leupold Mark 4HD 2.5-10x42 provides a good balance of performance, versatility and useful features, while eliminating some of the needs of the battlefield, which tend to bog down the economics of many tactical scopes that are used for competition and law enforcement. This scope, part of Leupold's elite tactical line, is designed for sharp clarity and reliable performance under the most demanding conditions. Featuring M5C3 ZeroLock Adjustments and a first focal plane TMR reticle, it's tailored for accuracy across a wide range of shooting disciplines.

Challenges in dynamic mixed range shooting often stem from the inability of scopes to maintain precision across variable distances and conditions. The Mark 4HD addresses this by combining cutting-edge optical engineering with robust mechanical systems, delivering improved accuracy and reliability over the older Mark 4 line.

Features and Benefits:

  • First Focal Plane TMR Reticle: Ensures consistent reticle size at all magnifications, facilitating accurate ranging and shot placement.
  • M5C3 ZeroLock Elevation Adjustment: Provide precise, tactile 0.1 MIL clicks with up to 24.7-MILs of adjustment in 3 revolutions, ensuring accurate adjustments and preventing inadvertent changes.
  • Professional-Grade Optical System: Maximizes light transmission, reduces glare in harsh lighting, and delivers the clarity demanded by professional shooters.
  • Versatile Magnification (2.5-10X): Accommodates a wide array of shooting situations, from close quarters to mid-range engagements.
  • 4X Zoom Factor: Keeping the zoom factor to a smaller number allows the manufacturer to concentrate on quality materials and performance for a more limited focal length, zeroing-in on the optics that matter and not overbuilding to accommodate larger and more complicated zoom ratios that add cost
  • Keep it Simple Design:  TMR reticle is a familiar favorite, non-illuminated for day shooting, sturdy build, best in class glass and a 30mm tube make for a winning combination and a great price.

Andrew Conrad discusses why he chose the Leupold Mark 4HD.

The Leupold Mark 4HD is engineered for clarity and precision. The HD lenses counteract light dispersion and heighten image sharpness, providing immaculate clarity. The scope's M5C3 elevation turret are integral for maintaining shot accuracy over time and varied environmental conditions, offering definitive feedback and precise adjustments. The TMR reticle in the first focal plane ensures the reticle scales with the target at all magnification levels, crucial for accurate ranging and shot placement, making the Mark 4HD a reliable tool for dynamic shooting scenarios.

The Mark 4HD provides more contrast and edge-to-edge clarity. The M5C3 ZeroLock elevation turret allows rapid adjustment in 0.1-mil increments with visible and tactile indicators. The windage turret is capped.

The scope tracks predictably with a precise return to zero. The 4:1 zoom ratio allows a good balance. Less and the shooter feels lacking. More, and the engineering starts to get difficult to maintain image quality without a large cost increase. The eyepiece is adjusted with a simple turn, while power adjustments are fast using the integrated throw lever. The 30mm main tube allows the user to pick from a broad range of mount options from many manufacturers.

Comparative Insights:

  • Versus Older Mark 4 Models: The Mark 4HD introduces advancements in optical clarity, turret precision, and a more streamlined main tube packed with professional-grade features.
  • Versus Mark 5HDInstead of using a 35mm maintube, like the Mark 5HD, the Mark 4HD opts for a more streamlined design, but offers the same level of performance. This design choice allows for compatibility with a broader range of mounts.

The Mark 5HD, with its 35mm tube, represents Leupold's top-tier offering with best-in-class coatings and military-grade durability. In contrast, the Mark 4HD, with its 30mm tube, provides a balance of performance and versatility, suitable for a wide range of applications.

The Mark 4HD's coatings and construction are designed to meet the needs of both professional and recreational users, offering high performance in a variety of conditions.  For a mid-range scope, Leupold is pushing the standard 42mm objective to its optical limits which results in better light transmission and image clarity.

Finally, there is a cost to the manufacturer in every step up in zoom factor to keep the consistency of image correct. By limiting the zoom factor to 4:1, Leupold achieves some cost savings and while still fielding a wide range for a mid-range magnification scope (2.5-10x) and including HD glass for great image resolution.

TMR Reticle Highlights

  • An open center with fine aiming dot prevents obscuring the target at long range
  • Uses hash marks instead of dots for increased ranging and holdover precision
  • Provides aiming points for both wind and bullet drop compensation
  • Hash marks are spaced 0.5 MIL apart, transitioning to 0.2 MIL spacing on the outer edges
  • Not caliber specific
  • Front (first) focal plane
  • MIL based systems are the current military standard
