The Mark 4 was a mainstream military scope during the Global War on Terror, and Leupold optics graduated to the Mark 6 and then the Mark 8, and found great civilian and military audience with the Mark 5HD, which is the flagship Leupold tactical scope. Demand has been strong for a great optic without some of the world class superior performance requirements of the Mark 5HD, so Leupold introduced the Mark 4HD in early 2024. The question for Leupold optics engineers was how to take the Mark 5HD, and trim down some of the cost, while presenting a superior performing scope. Also, the Mark 4HD brings the 34mm tube, which unquestionably is more of a standard width and easier to find mounts. With each level of zoom, there is added cost to engineer optics performance, so keeping to a 4-times factor helps Leupold to trim costs while not sacrificing optical quality.
Keeping the impressive weight savings of the Mark 5HD line, the Mark 4HD 6-24X52 is a versatile, high performance optic. With its 4X magnification range and ample field of view, this optic is capable of clearing courses and topping podiums. Excellent light transmission and image clarity come from high quality glass and Leupold’s Professional-Grade Optical System. The 34mm main tube gives the erector system plenty of space for the adjustments that demanding long range competitions require and offer a wider selection of optic mounts. Locking turrets feature tactile clicks while an included power throw lever makes magnification changes smooth and fast. Like all Leupold scopes, the Mark 4HD is manufactured in America. This version is first focal plane and has a MIL-based PR2-MIL reticle to give the shooter fine hold points with its 1/4 MIL hashmarks.

The Mark 4HD provides more contrast and edge-to-edge clarity. The M5C3 ZeroLock turrets allow for windage and elevation to be adjusted in 0.1-mil increments with visible and tactile indicators.
Parallax focus is a side knob that is easy to use, and the scope tracks predictably with a precise return to zero. The 4:1 zoom ratio allows a good balance. Less and the shooter feels lacking. More, and the engineering starts to get difficult to maintain image quality without a large cost increase. The eyepiece is adjusted with a simple turn, while power adjustments are fast using the integrated throw lever. The 34mm main tube allows the user to pick from a broad range of mount options from many manufacturers.
