Colt 1911 Government Classic Limited Edition .45 Auto

Just because it won two World Wars doesn't mean it can't evolve.

The venerable M1911 needs no introduction. You've seen it on TV, in movies and video games, or maybe even in your gun safe. Colt is the original, and the standard by which working guns are measured. But is it possible for a workhorse to also be a show pony?

When the aesthetics of firearms are discussed, there are a few that come up often. The refinement of the Browning Superposed made in Belgium, the iconic silhouette of the Thompson submachine gun, and the deep, lustrous bluing of Colt pistols all have a seat at the table. The Single Action Army, the legendary Python, and the old war horse 1911 have all been offered in Colt Royal Blue. The Colt 1911 Classic Limited Edition is a Series 70 Government model with this timeless finish, fitted with checkered double diamond walnut grips, and with modern quality of life improvements.

Features and Highlights

  • Series 70 firing system for simplicity and a better trigger
  • Four line rollmark with centered Rampant Colt
  • Brass bead front with Novak low profile rear offers an excellent sight picture

"We basically took our Classic 1911 C, which is our 70 Series pistol, and added a couple more features to make it handy at the range and for self-defense." - Patrick Beekly, Colt Firearms

The 1911 pistol has always been more than just a firearm; it's a piece of history. For enthusiasts, the Colt Series 70 isn't just another gun—it's a return to the golden age of firearms. Let's dive deeper into the story of this iconic model.

In the early days, Colt's Patent Firearms Mfg. Co. was the undisputed king of 1911-type pistols. Their dedication to the original design, known as the Government Model, was unwavering. For nearly 60 years, from 1911 to 1970, the design remained largely unchanged. But in 1971, the first significant mechanical "improvement" was introduced. The "Accurizor" barrel and bushing aimed to enhance the intrinsic accuracy of the Colt Government Model pistols, leading to the birth of the MK IV/Series 70.

Fast forward to 1983, and Colt made another significant change. Concerns about product liability led to the introduction of a new firing pin safety system in the 1911 line. This change marked the transition from the Series 70 to the Series 80 models. However, not everyone was a fan. Many gunsmiths found the new system challenging to work with, and purists believed the small parts of the safety system were fragile.

The turn of the century brought challenges for Colt. By 2001, rival manufacturers dominated the 1911 market. But Colt's new CEO, retired General William M. Keyes, saw an opportunity. He recognized that while other manufacturers were innovating, the public's perception of Colt was rooted in nostalgia. This insight led to the reintroduction of the Series 70, a nod to "the way they used to make 'em."

The new Series 70 was not just a replica; it was a testament to Colt's legacy. While it retained many features of the original, there were notable differences. The finger collet barrel bushing was omitted, making the new Series 70 more akin to the pre-1970 models. The sights were updated for better visibility, and the internal parts, while reminiscent of the Series 80, were tailored for the Series 70 design.

Over the years, the Series 70 has proven its mettle. Its performance, reliability, and feel resonate with the essence of Colt's legacy. The slide action is smooth, the controls operate seamlessly, and the fit is snug yet not overly tight. This pistol is a testament to Colt's commitment to quality and tradition.

The Colt Series 70 is more than just a firearm—it's a journey through time. It's a bridge between the past and the present, offering gun enthusiasts a chance to own and experience a piece of history. Whether you're a seasoned shooter or a budding enthusiast, the Series 70 promises an experience like no other.

What makes the Limited Edition special?

"Colt’s new 01911SE-A1 is quite a gun! It is accurate and reliable enough to use for competition and self-defense. However, it is also handsome enough to pass along to family members as an heirloom." - Mike Detty, Athlon Outdoors

At Charlie's Custom Clones, we value tradition, craftsmanship, and performance. The Colt 1911 Classic Limited Edition maintains the aesthetics of the Classic series with the most demanded modern enhancements.

An enhanced frame with an undercut trigger guard and up-swept beavertail grip safety allow for a higher grip for better recoil control. This grip safety combined with the Commander ring hammer eliminate hammer bite present for some shooters on older models with spur hammers and short tang safeties. The flat mainspring housing is serrated and the front strap is checkered for sure grip even in wet conditions. The magazine release, 1918 style safety, and slide release all feature the classic checkering of vintage models. The GI spec guide rod is retained along with the checkered recoil spring plug and vertical rear slide serrations.

When you think of a 1911, Colt is the name that echoes through history. This model is a testament to Colt's legacy, featuring iconic rollmarks and that legendary royal blued finish. Beyond aesthetics, it promises performance and reliability. Whether for fighting or fun, this pistol belongs in any holster or collection.

THIS IS A SERIALIZED FIREARM.  It must ship to a Federal Firearms License holder.  No civilian exceptions.

Buying and shipping through Charlie’s is easy, but there is some information you need to know. Only a federally licensed firearms dealer may receive a firearm or federally regulated serialized item (like a receiver or suppressor). We cannot ship these items directly to you. Please follow these steps to process your transaction:

1)     Check your state laws to make sure the federally regulated item you want to purchase is legal in your state. Your FFL dealer should be able to give you all of the necessary information regarding your state specific laws. But, if we ship to your FFL, and there is a legal issue, we cannot accept a return. So please make sure that you know and follow your local and state laws.

2)     A quick google search will show you what Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealers are in your area. When you are ready to purchase, contact the FFL dealer you would like to use and get their shipping address. During the check-out, put YOUR address in the “billing” section and the FFL DEALER’S address in the “shipping” section. If you don’t know your FFLs address, that’s okay. You can send the information later.

3)     After check out, make sure to contact your FFL dealer to ensure they will receive your shipment for you (most do this for a small fee, but you should always double check).

4)     Have your dealer send us a copy of their FFL to FFL@CharliesCustomClones.com. Charlie’s does not reach to your FFL (MAKE THEM EARN THEIR FEE!!!)

5)     Be patient! In order to ensure we remain compliant with all federal laws, our compliance department is kept separate from our sales and operations team. Please allow a few days for our compliance officer to verify all of your dealer’s documents and ensure all federal laws are being observed. You should hear from our compliance department within 3-4 business days. If not, feel free to reach out for a status update.

That’s it! We try to make this process as simple as possible for our customers, but if you are unfamiliar the process or have any other questions, please visit our How to Buy a Firearm page for more details.

California and New York residents please, click here. The process may be different due to state specific laws.
