The Badger Ordnance Remington Short Action M40A3/A5 Scope Rail was made specifically for USMC M40A3/A5 Scout Sniper Rifles. It features the USMC Clip Slot recoil lug pattern, 30 MOA bias, and a true MIL STD 1913 slot pattern for additional mounting options. It utilizes #8-40 screws. The Badger Scope Rail is machined from Ordnance Grade Steel and Mil Spec Manganese Phosphate finished.

Badger base for Remington 700 Clip Slotted M40 A3/A5 Base,  US Marine Corps issue M1913 Scope rail for M40A3/M40A5 sniper rifles with clip slot receivers. This is made specifically for clip-slotted receivers.  Machined steel alloy to current USMC A3/A5 specifications.

Note:  This requires an experienced gunsmith to install, as the receiver needs to be cut to receive the contours of the scope mount.

Significance of a Clipped Receiver

A clipped receiver refers to a specific modification of the rifle's receiver to accommodate the installation of the scope rail. This modification involves cutting the receiver to fit the contours of the scope mount, which is necessary for the proper alignment and stability of the scope. The clipped receiver is crucial for the M40A3 and M40A5 rifles because it ensures that the scope rail is securely mounted, allowing for precise aiming and shooting accuracy.

Background and Use of a Clipped Receiver

Receiver tops are relief cut to accommodate loading the rifle from stripper clips—with a rear slot acting as the clip guide and a concave front cut allowing passage of bullet tips and serving as a "groove" for a matching "tongue" on a semi-custom-made optical platform. Their top surfaces are flat-ground; optical mount holes are enlarged from commercial standard 6-48 size to accept 8-40 screws.

The clipped receiver design is integral to the M40A3 and M40A5 sniper rifles used by the US Marine Corps. These rifles are built on the Remington 700 platform This design is particularly important for military applications where reliability and precision are paramount. The modification is typically performed by USMC Precision Weapons Section (PWS) operators or 2112 armorers, who are skilled in customizing and maintaining sniper rifles for optimal performance.  This design started in 2001, and many experienced Scout snipers tell Charlie's that the actual use of stripper clipped ammo was rare, as ball ammo (found on stripper clips) was seldom used, but was a back-up for snipers in distress, or who had run out of match grade ammo, and could use the ammo that was on hand in stripper clips.

Badger Part 306-06-A3

The Badger Ordnance part number 306-06-A3 refers to the specific model of the scope rail designed for the M40A3 and M40A5 rifles. This model includes the features mentioned above, such as the 30 MOA cant and the USMC Clip Slot recoil lug pattern, making it suitable for military use with these sniper rifles.  The rail-type mount is made with 30 MOA of downward tilt to accommodate elevation adjustments for firing out to 1,000 yards.
