Potomac Armory GAU-5A/A Complete Upper Receiver

Vietnam-Era USAF Carbine Inspired - Pin & Weld 16" Legal Configuration

Potomac Armory presents this carefully crafted GAU-5A/A inspired upper receiver, based on the USAF's Vietnam-era carbine design. This 12.7" pin and weld configuration maintains civilian legal status while delivering retro aesthetics and reliable performance.

Highlights:

  • Historically Inspired: Based on the USAF GAU-5A/A configuration used in the Son Tay Raid
  • Slick Side Upper: M16 style without forward assist or shell deflector
  • Pin & Weld: 12.7" barrel with permanently attached flash hider for 16"+ legal length
  • Complete Assembly: Ships with properly chrome-lined BCG, charging handle, and all components
  • Operation Ivory Coast Legacy: Design based on the carbines carried during the famous 1970 Son Tay POW rescue mission

History & Technical Details

The GAU-5A/A represented the Air Force's distinct approach to the M16 platform during the Vietnam War era. Unlike the Army's XM177 series, the GAU-5A/A (also referenced as the Colt 630 or 649) notably omitted the forward assist mechanism, creating the distinctive "slick side" receiver profile.

These compact carbines gained historical significance during Operation Ivory Coast (the Son Tay Raid) in 1970, when special operations forces used them in the daring POW rescue attempt. Their compact design provided maneuverability in confined spaces while maintaining effective firepower.

The muzzle device is cosmetically accurate to the original Colt moderator but functions solely as a flash hider, not a silencer/suppressor. This ensures compliance with current regulations while maintaining the authentic appearance.

Potomac Armory's reproduction captures the key features of this historical platform, including the proper non-F-marked front sight base, tapered slip ring, and classic black carbine handguards. While incorporating some modern specifications for reliability, this upper retains the authentic look and feel that collectors and enthusiasts value.

Recommended Lower Receiver

For historical accuracy, this upper receiver should be paired with:

  • A1 profile full fence lower receiver
  • A1 pistol grip
  • Two-position collapsible stock

This combination will create the most authentic GAU-5A/A inspired build.
