Potomac Armory

The Geissele URG-I "near clone" 14.5-inch upper receiver group in 5.56 NATO — the standard-length URG-I configuration, built by Potomac Armory in 2024 with Geissele Mk16 DDC rail and buyer's choice of SureFire muzzle device, pinned and welded.
The URG-I — Upper Receiver Group, Improved — is the USASOC-adopted upgraded upper for the M4A1 carbine, fielded beginning around 2018. The program specifies a Geissele Mk16 DDC rail, a Daniel Defense cold-hammer-forged 14.5-inch barrel, a SureFire WARCOMP muzzle device, a mid-length gas system, and a low-profile gas block. The 14.5-inch configuration is the standard-issue length — the first time SOCOM adopted a mid-length gas system on a combat carbine upper, reducing bolt carrier velocity and improving the recoil impulse over the carbine-length M4A1.
This Potomac Armory "near clone" build uses the same Geissele Mk16 DDC rail and SureFire suppressor interface as the issued upper. The differences from a contract-issued URG-I are in the receiver, barrel, BCG, and gas block: the program-issued upper uses a Colt-forged receiver, a Daniel Defense CHF barrel, a Colt BCG, and a NAVSEA-approved gas block. The Potomac Armory build substitutes a military-grade mil-spec forged upper, an FN or Geissele CHF barrel (both chrome-lined, phosphate-coated, 1:7 twist, same 4150 CMV steel alloy), and a military-grade phosphated BCG. Both barrel options are quality matched — FN is the barrel supplier for the US military's M4A1 and M16A4 contracts; Geissele's proprietary mid-weight profile is their own design.
Charlie's Custom Clones worked directly with Geissele to bring the first civilian URG-I to market in 2018. The Potomac Armory 2024 build continues that lineage — same design intent, current-production components, built to the same standard that made the original CCC/Geissele collaboration the reference point for the commercial URG-I market.
The SureFire muzzle device is pinned and welded by Potomac Armory before shipping, bringing the overall barrel length to 16 inches for non-NFA compliance. All SureFire options support attachment of a SureFire SOCOM series suppressor.
We've been building URG-I uppers since the program went commercial. If you have a barrel preference (FN or Geissele), add a note to your order — otherwise Potomac Armory builds with whichever barrel is most available. Order yours today — we'll get it out the door fast.
