Lake City ammo is known for its high quality. Green tip ammo has been used for a decade or more by the US Military, and while not tecnically amor piercing, it does have a solid steel core, which increase penetration. The XM designation means that there is some blemish that did not make it to 100% military grade, which is M855. XM855 ball ammo can be widely used in most military correct 5.56mm M4/ AR15 platforms. Best used for personal protection and outdoor target shooting.
This particular load uses the SS109 bullet, which is a 62-grain green tip M855 full metal jacket projectile with a lead and steel core for retaining velocity and accuracy at longer ranges. Though not classified as armor piercing, the mild steel penetrator in the SS109 does indeed pierce more things better than traditional lead core projectiles.
120 rounds of Federal Lake City XM855 comes packaged in a miniature plastic ammo can. 5.56mm M855 Ball Ammunition has a green bullet tip. Adopted by NATO in 1980, the new load has a spitzer boat-tail bullet. It also has much-improved penetration characteristics over the old M193 55-grain projectile at all ranges, resulting in higher retained velocity and greater accuracy at long range. The 5.56mm M855 is ideal for use in the M16A2 and M4 rifles.
The 5.56x45mm cartridge uses the highest quality annealed brass casings, the most reliable primers, and the most technical powders with flash inhibitors. The SS109 bullet features a boat tail, cannelure, a mild steel penetrator, and a lead core all covered by a thick gilding metal jacket. The finished XM855 rounds have sealed primers and case mouths for long term storage and moisture protection.
