The armorers at Potomac Armory went to the drawing board, and took their favorite design of LPGB, and went to the experts who make gas blocks and asked them how they would manufacture the gas block and drill location that they had in-mind, and gave instructions that materials and machining and finishing should be optimized for their design. They evaluated a few, and looked at the various steel alloys, and pushed aside the stainless option as hard to blacken and unnecessary, then looked at 4140, which is often chosen as it is soft barrel steel, but wanted something more specifically made for gas blocks and chose 12L14 steel, which precision grade steel used in high pressure valves and is known for its high tensile strength (70k to 80k PSI) and machinability.
